What to do during the last few days at the Great New York State Fair

There are hundreds of games including logrolling, water gun target practice and shooting hoops for a chance to win a life-size gorilla.

The 2017 Great New York State Fair is in its last few days. Here is how to make the most out of the fair:

Friday

Learn how to make soap, see an authentic 1800s cabin or attend a livestock tour at the Witter Agricultural Museum.

The New York State Agricultural Society, the group that sponsors the museum, dates back to 1832. Live demonstrations at the museum give visitors a glance back in time about family farms, how they’ve sustained for over a century and what dozens of awarded farmers have contributed to agriculture.

Events at the museum take place throughout the day, like CNY Woodturners, MooU guided livestock tours and butter making. The full lineup can be found on the fair’s website.

Dogs take the stage at the Waterbark dog shows in the Times Square area. The President’s Choice SuperDogs and Milord Entertainment divers have daily shows in the custom pools that allow visitors to see the performances above and below the surface.



Native American history and culture will be highlighted during the annual Six Nations Day, a celebration of the Iroquois League. Native Americans will receive free admission on Friday through Gate 4.

At 2 p.m. A Tribe Called Red, made up of three indigenous Canadians, will play at Chevy Court. The group prides itself on its work with promoting indigenous culture and inclusivity.

“This is an interesting dance group basically doing EDM but infusing tribal music, dance and issues. It’s an interesting take on dance and politics,” said Dave Bullard, a state fair representative.

Saturday

The fair announced another promotion for Saturday — anyone can get in for $1 by wearing SU apparel.

The Wegmans Demonstration Kitchen will feature food tips for any student with a kitchen. The first showing on Saturday is at 11 a.m., followed by another at 5 p.m., where Wegmans chefs will dish out their secret recipes and cooking and presentation tips.

Saturday is also Timber Sports and Forestry Day. The day will be packed with tributes to New York’s forestry industry. Teams will compete in several timber-related athletic games like logrolling, underhand chop, axe throw, bowsaw and speed climbing. Other features include meet and greets with professional lumberjacks and a draft horse demonstration that starts at 10:30 a.m.

At night, Joe Jonas’ band, DNCE, will perform at Chevy Court at 8 p.m. DNCE’s popular songs include “Cake by the Ocean,” “Kissing Strangers” and “Toothbrush.”

Sunday

For food lovers, the fair’s food truck competition is the place to be. It starts at the crack of dawn and runs for most of the day.

Entrees are available to the public for only $2. More than 20 trucks are expected to participate in the competition taking place around Chevy Court.

“Meet the Horses” is another event to check out. Running all day from 10:30 a.m. till 7 p.m., the fairgoers can pet and ride horses at the World of Horses Tent. Remember to wear or bring a pair of jeans or bottoms that fully cover your legs to avoid chaffing.

“Sunday night, the one that I think will be most attractive to students is Migos, which will be at 8 p.m. at Chevy Court,” Bullard said.

The iconic rap group will perform Sunday night as the final headliner for the younger crowd. Be sure to arrive early because the performance will be packed.
